BUDGET DEBATE 2010
Foreign workers lift local pay
By Melissa Pang
SINGAPORE cannot do away with foreign workers as they are crucial to the development of its infrastructure and service sector.
Winding up the three-day debate on the 2010 Budget Statement in Parliament on Thursday, Finance Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam highlighted the vital role played by this group of workers.
‘If we had not brought them in, we would not have been able to ease the supply bottlenecks in the private property markets, build HDB flats, or expand our MRT network.’ He added that essential services would also be affected, with hospitals and nursing homes facing a shortage of nurses and caregivers, ‘even with good pay being offered to attract Singaporeans’.
The rise in Singaporeans’ incomes in the last decade would not have been possible if businesses had been prevented from expanding quickly in the second of the decade, and their growth would have been choked off it they had not been able to get more foreign workers, he said.
‘Bringing in foreign workers allowed businesses to seize opportunities, accept orders and grow, and to create more jobs for Singaporeans,’ said Mr Tharman.
Rebutting criticism that the influx of foreign workers had reduced wages for lower income Singaporeans, Mr Tharman pointed out that the healthy growth of wages for low wage families from 2006 to 2008 corresponded with the period when the foreign workforce was growing most rapidly.
‘It was how we were able to offset the decline in wages for our lower-income group that had taken place in the first part of the decade.’
But Mr Tharman cautioned that growing dependence on foreign workers is not a sustainable strategy in the long term, as this “will reduce the incentive for employers to upgrade their operations and raise productivity’.
‘We will also run up against the social and physical limits that an ever-increasing proportion of foreigners in our workforce would bring,’ he warned.
yea rise in singaporean income, because all the singaporeans holding low income job had thus been replaced by FTrash, thus bringing up the base average wage of singaporeans.
and yea, seize opportunities to hire cheaper and faster FTrash…
creating more jobs for singaporeans? not if you count being unemployed as a job.
lower income group? they have since become the NO-INCOME group due to the opening of the flood gate to FTrash.
Well done Tharman Shanmugaratnam, i guess you should give up your seat too, since all you’re doing is talking crap all day and making every peasant in singapore ever more miserable.
Student kills roommate for snoring

A Chinese college student fed up with his roommate’s snoring, has confessed to stabbing him to death in the middle of the night.
Zhao Yan, 22, was stabbed in the chest and back late last year in his room at Jilin Agricultural University in the northeastern province of Jilin, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Tuesday.
His roommate, 23-year-old Guo Liwei, confessed Monday that he stabbed Zhao because of a dispute over his snoring, the report said, citing the Changchun Intermediate People’s Court.
Guo had previously complained to Zhao about his snoring and posted video of him snoring on a university Web site, which created more tension between the two, Xinhua reported.
“I told Zhao about it and he became angry. He verbally abused me several times, prompting me to kill him,” Guo was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
Guo is currently awaiting sentencing by the court, the report said. Calls to the court rang unanswered Tuesday morning.
Violent crimes have been on the rise in China, especially as the country’s rapid economic development has created a growing rich-poor gap. - AP
Two Men Face Court for Goat Sex, Owner Demands Wedding
March 1st, 2010 • Uncategorized
(AFP from NewsCore) - Two young men accused of having sex with a goat in central Mozambique were facing criminal charges, and the goat’s owner was demanding they make traditional wedding arrangements, state media said Friday.
The young men, whose names and ages were not released, were caught in the act by police and arrested outside the rural town of Mbucuta in central Mozambique, the website of the state broadcaster said.
“One of the young men was naked and holding the goat’s head, and the other was having sex with the animal,” witness Mario Creva told Radio Mozambique.
District prosecutor Leonides Mapasse said the two would face trial for simple larceny.
The goat’s owner may also file a civil suit against them, he said.
The owner was demanding the young men pay him damages and initiate a traditional wedding ceremony by paying “lobolo,” a dowry, a family member told Radio Mozambique.

Casino entry shouldn’t be free for foreign students, workers
WHAT struck me on Monday when I visited the casino at Resorts World Sentosa was the long queue of foreigners waiting to enter.
One could tell that most were work permit holders and foreigners studying here: Bangladeshis, Indians and Chinese formed the overwhelming majority.
Tourists were in the minority. Inside the casino, one could not miss these work permit workers and students. They were everywhere - mingling with the crowd, sitting at the gaming tables and trying their hand at the different games and the slot machines.
If the Government is concerned about the harmful effects that gambling may have on Singaporeans by levying the $100 entrance fee, should it not also worry about work permit holders and foreign students gambling in the casinos?
Blue-collar workers toil under the sun to earn their limited keep, only to wager away their wages at the gaming tables. Parents spend a princely sum to send their precious children here to study, only for them to waste time in the casinos.
The Government should reconsider allowing work permit holders and foreign students studying here to enter the casino free.
After all, they are not the target group of patrons. Work permit holders and students from abroad studying here may be foreigners but they are not tourists.
